Portrait photo shoot with Mareike in freezing cold

It was ice-cold and windy yesterday afternoon. At least we had a long time of sunshine and blue sky between snow showers† just while I photographed the beautiful Mareike. But the freezing was worth it ;-)

We knowing each other for years now and never did a photo shoot although we had wanted it for a long time. Recently she is studying far away and is not often in Hanover anymore. So we used the only time we had yesterday afternoon and went out in the very cold outside for a photo shoot.

When we started to set up the gear we stood in the middle of a snow shower. But we were lucky because the sun came out and shined for more than one hour…

Mareike was very brave and we got a lot of wonderful photos!

I used an Elinchrom Quadra A-Head with support of a Nikon SB-900 to make some areas of the bridge and the wood brighter (see last two photos below). Photos are slightly postprocessed in Lightroom…

[Update 03-07-2010: There is now a video from this photo shoot available]

Richard Maude - Great pictures Stefan with a beautiful light quality.I’d be interested to know how the Quadra heads fit into the EzyBox as the entry hole is quite tight.Do you have any set-up pictures ?

All the best

Richard

Stefan Simonsen - Hi Richard,

I took some quick shoots for you and put them up to flicker:

The head fits perfectly into the small hole of the EzyBox. The only bad thing is that you should by the adaptor (about 105 USD at adorama.com) and the speedring adaptor is about 25 USD…

Did this help you a little bit?

Stefan

Richard Maude - Thanks so much yes that’s very helpful indeed.I knew it would be a tight fit but thats good in that there’s no wasted light spilling out the sides…perfect !

Thanks once again.

Richard

fred - Hi,

Nice photos, but I have a question regarding the ranger quadra when you took the shoot against the sun on the wood bridge, was the flash at full power ?

Do you find 400J powerful enough for outside use when the sun shines ?

Thanks and Ciao

Barry Khan - Great post, love your images. I just purchased a 2 head Quadra set today. Quick question if you don’t mind. Do I need the EL-Adapter in order to fit an EZYBox to the quadra head?

Many thanks.

Barry

Barry Khan - Sorry for my stupid comment. I just read your reply to Richard! :)

Thanks

Kirth Ferris - Could you tell me how you fired both the Quadra and Speedlight wirelessly?

Kristof Pattyn - Hi Stefan,

lately I have been youtubing alot and via your videos I found your blog. Nice work and very informative. I have been wondering about switching from speedlites to a pack and two heads. The Quadra has been in my mind for some time now. Thank’s to your video I see that I could use my EZboxes on the Quadra head.

Thanks for sharing!

Keep up the good work!

Stefan Simonsen - Hi Kristof, just a small hint: You have to buy the Adapter from Lastolite for the Lastolite Bajonett AND the Adapter RQ-EL to fit the normal Elinchrom Stuff onto the Quadra. Take a look here http://www.flickr.com/photos/simonsenphoto/4416479207/ and following pictures!

Nasser Ali - Thanks for sharing this nice shots and techniques.

I would like to ask you how did you control the SB900 and the Quadra heads. EL Skyport obviously but which cable did you use on Nikon’s SB?

Best wishes

Stefan Simonsen - I didn’t use any cable – just set the SB-900 (or SB-800) in M and photo cell mode while using the remote setting (in the menu it’s called SU-4). The SB-900 then fires every time another flash fires. (Please take a look at: )
